Police investigated a suspicious bag placed on stage during Florida A&M University’s Founder’s Day Convocation in the Alfred Lawson Center.
Witnesses at the event say a man walked up to the stage. He handed the speaker, former FAMU President Fredrick Humphries, a pamphlet and then set a red bag on the stage. The man walked away, and authorities escorted him from the building. A worker removed the bag from the stage and took it into the back.
After the convocation, FAMU PD shut down parts of Wahnish Way to investigate. The Tallahassee Police Department and the Leon County Sheriff’s Office brought in their tactical robots to examine the bag’s contents. Members of the bomb squad then opened the bag and finally declared it wasn’t a threat. Traffic was re-routed and residents displaced for more than two hours while the police investigated.
FAMU enjoyed its 125th anniversary, but the investigation didn’t disrupt celebrations occurring elsewhere on campus.
